Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebrations at St. John’s

The public is invited to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at three special events, January 15 and 16 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 321 W. Chestnut Street, Lancaster.

Sunday, Jan. 15: Guest preacher Dr. Amanda Kemp and McCaskey High School Gospel Choir concert

Poet-performer, author, playwright, and racial justice advocate Dr. Amanda Kemp will bring her unique blend of activism, spirituality, theatre arts, and history to St. John’s pulpit, preaching at both the 8 and 10:15 a.m. services.

Dr. Kemp taught at Cornell University, Dickinson College, Millersville University, and Franklin & Marshall College where she served as chair of Africana Studies. The Lancaster mother of five teens is married to violinist Michael Jamanis.

Later that afternoon at 3 p.m., St. John’s will host a free concert by the McCaskey High School Gospel Choir, followed by a reception in the parish hall. The choir, under the direction of Colette N. Stephens, will perform a range of inspirational choral music. A free-will offering will be taken in support of the choir’s mission.

In 2010, the choir received the St. John’s Episcopal Church Martin Luther King Jr. “Prolonging the Dream” award.

Monday, Jan. 16: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Kids’ Camp

Children ages 6 to 10 are invited to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday at a free Kids’ Camp from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

“Leading to Freedom” is the theme of the day’s program. Students will explore Harriet Tubman as a role model for leadership though the children’s book, Go Down Moses.

Activities will include arts and crafts, labyrinth walking, prayer and faith reflections, and drummer Jeff Kuhn leading the children in an orchestra of African drumming.

Lunch will be provided. Attendees can pre-register by calling St. John’s church office at 717-299-1188.
