The Rev. Dr. Barbara Seras became St. John’s Assistant Priest in August 2015, and when our rector retired, she became Associate Priest.
Mother Barbara’s ministry includes leading Christian education and formation for children and adults; celebrating the Word and Sacraments; and visiting homebound and hospitalized parishioners. She also shares in greeting and welcoming newcomers to St. John’s.
Mother Barbara had been no stranger to St. John’s. A resident of Lancaster, she not only worshiped at St. John’s, but assisted in celebrating and preaching during Fr. John’s Sabbatical leave in 2014.
Born and raised in Carlisle, Mother Barbara was baptized as an infant in the Greek Orthodox Church. She attended Chatham College in Pittsburgh before entering Dickinson School of Law. While practicing law, she was also a small business owner and operator.
In 1990 she entered the Master of Divinity program at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL, and following graduation was ordained to the priesthood in 1993. Her ministry experiences include being Program Director for Episcopal Social Ministries in the Diocese of Maryland where she coordinated summer day camps and youth employment program for inner city children in Baltimore. She served as Assistant to the Rector at Christ Church, Columbia, MD, as Rector of St. Mark’s Church, Highland, MD, as Rector of St. Mary’s Church, Woodlawn, MD, and Associate Rector for St. James, Lancaster.
For two years Mother Barbara also tested her vocation as a religious sister at the Episcopal convent, the Community of St. John Baptist in Mendham, NJ. Recently, she has been the Coordinator for Province III of the Episcopal Church.
In Community, I find my home. In Community, I find that peace and hope, reconciliation and healing from God alone. It may be other places. But I believe that as each of us commits to live with integrity, there is no better place to call home.
