St. John’s Episcopal Church, 321 W. Chestnut Street, Lancaster, is embarking on a renovation project to create a more inviting and accessible center for worship, fellowship and ministry–one that will offer greater opportunity to enrich the lives of members and the community. The community is invited to learn details of the project at “St. John’s Revealed,” an event for all ages on June 3 First Friday from 6-8 p.m.
Guests will be able to view architectural drawings and videos and speak with St. John’s members about the project and parish community outreach initiatives. Special activities will be available for children. Refreshments will be served.
The renovation begins this summer and will include:
- A five-level elevator and a ramp parallel to Chestnut Street will make it easy for people with physical limitations to access worship space, the auditorium, basement classrooms, courtyard, and all-purpose building.
- A refurbished courtyard with seat walls and gardens, and a permanent labyrinth for contemplation and spiritual healing for the entire neighborhood.
- A two-story, all-glass design to enclose the area between the Parish Hall and church, with an entrance visible from the street.
- Environmentally-friendly rain gardens that will capture, filter, and slowly release storm water.
- New columbarium niches inside and outside the new building.
